META architectuurbureau and Rudy Uytenhaak Architectenbureau submit together the competition design for the high-rise Striga 2 in commission of Stadsuitbreiding Antwerpen Nieuw Zuid.
The city development of Antwerpen Nieuw Zuid is a durable, green and modern neighbourhood close to the city center, the Schelde, a park and various important roads.
In the master plan of Studio Associato Bernardo Secchi Paola Viganò an 80m tower was designed with a plinth building along the central inner street.
The volume is built up in 3 parts. A robust plinth which forms the urban tissue, this volume is continued in the tower where the terraces are draped like a veil and the volume is ended by a structural crown. This way a fitting relation is started with the surroundings on various levels and it becomes recognizable from afar.
IN the plinth shops are located along the central axis of the master plan and offices under the tower volume.
On top of this a very flexible plan was developed to offer a wide variation of housing types. The compact heart and strategic positioning of the shafts make it possible to realize eight to two houses per floor.
Through a rational design of the supporting structure and façade the flexible plan is reinforced and the viability of the plan enlarged.
Around the tower volume a light full ring of terraces from the structural crown. The terraces can be closed off by a single glass-folding front. This produces a microclimate and allows for the terrace to be used optimally both at height and at any time of the year.
The building was designed integrally and has a high ambition concerning durability. An optimized use of materials, energy needs, collective heating, intelligent ventilation systems, water (re)usage and a compact and well insulated volume with terraces that function as a climate façade results in a future proof building.
